Abstract

[Purpose] This study focuses on the role of social enterprises as an alternative to enhancing the labor market position and employment stability of middle-aged and senior workers. Social enterprises create sustainable jobs for marginalized and vulnerable groups in the traditional labor market structure and have significant potential to provide customized employment models that utilize the experience and expertise of middle-aged and senior workers. [Methodology] This study investigates the job policy demand perceived by middle-aged and senior workers and empirically analyzes how social enterprises can contribute to addressing employment challenges for this demographic. [Implications] The research findings reveal that while middle-aged and senior workers demonstrate a high willingness to participate in economic activities, they face significant difficulties in re-entering the labor market due to structural and individual barriers related to age and gender. In particular, age-related prejudice and a lack of hiring demand were identified as major obstacles, while women experienced additional barriers such as skill deficiencies and career interruptions. Based on these findings, this study discusses the role and potential of social enterprises in promoting labor market participation and employment opportunities for middle-aged and senior workers.
