Abstract

According to historical records, the current Namwon region is divided into three districts: Baekje’s Goryeonggun and Imsilgun, and Silla's Mosanhyeon. The first time that Namwon appears in the forefront with an important role is during the Unified Silla period, in the Namwon So-gyeong(685). However, according to archaeological data, numerous relics and artifacts from prehistoric times to historical times have been discovered in Namwon, showing that it was a place where a small country grew from a very early period. The earliest record in literature is the conflict between Baekje and Gaya(Imna) in 487. The Gaya(Imna) that appears here is related to the eastern part of Jeonbuk (Namwon, Imsil, Jangsu) in the upper reaches of the Seomjin River. Archaeologically, the Jangsu Dongchon-ri・Sambong-ri tombs and the Namwon Durak-ri・Wolsan-ri tombs from the late 5th century are related to Gaya, and Chinese artifacts from the Namwon Wolsan-ri tomb suggest exchanges with Baekje, supporting the records of 487. Meanwhile, in records from the early 6th century, place names such as Sanggimul and Hagimul in Samguksagi, Gimun in Ilbonseoki, Sampamun in Shinchanseongsirok, Samgimun in Sokilbonhugi, Gimunha in Hanwon, and Sangsamun in Yangjikgongdo appear. These place names, including Gimul, Gimun, Pamun, and Samun, are different expressions for the same place and are signs that show the uniqueness of the Namwon area. This place is called Baekje’s ‘Goryonggun’, and the stone chamber with tunnel entrance of Namwon Chochon-ri tomb is a relic related to Baekje’s rule. After occupying the Namwon region, Baekje advanced into the old Gaya region, reaching from Amakseong in Unbong(616) to Sokhamseong in Hamyang(624) and Daeyaseong in Hapcheon(642), and taking over Namwon and Unbong in Jeonbuk and Hamyang, Geochang, Sancheong, Namhae, Hadong, and Jinju in Gyeongnam. This situation continued until 663, when Silla captured Geojeolseong in Geochang, Geomulseong on the border of Namwon and Jangsu, and Sapyeongseong in Imsil.
