Abstract
The Korean gaming industry aims for global expansion but faces challenges with originality, hindering international recognition. Major Korean game companies strive to infuse their games with Korean cultural elements to enhance originality and global appeal. This cultural integration is anticipated to play a pivotal role in shaping the industry’s future, necessitating thorough research endeavors. Since storytelling is vital in games, understanding character portrayal, particularly of villains, is crucial. This study evaluates the integration of Korean cultural elements into villain character design in Korean games, addressing the originality issue. It also examines potential Korean motifs to replace foreign ones. Analysis shows that most villain characters in Korean games rely heavily on Western cultural elements, mainly religious or mythical motifs. Only a small part, approximately 4 out of 60 characters examined, display distinct Korean characteristics, highlighting a lack of representation. This dilution of design is apparent in attire, accessories, physical traits, and special effects. To tackle this issue, a detailed categorization of design elements has been created, aiding the integration of Korean cultural aspects into villain character designs. This study provides vital guidance to enhance the originality and cultural identity of villains in Korean games, serving as a valuable resource for developers.
