Abstract
This study empirically analyzes the recent convergence of discourse on North Korea within South Korean society, focusing on the narrowing perceptual gap between political ideologies. Utilizing data from the Unification Attitude Survey conducted between 2022 and 2024, the study examines how perceptions of the possibility of dialogue with the North Korean regime and inter-Korean relations have changed across ideological groups. The analysis reveals that while significant differences between progressives and conservatives remain, a meaningful convergence emerged in 2024, with the perceptual gap between the two groups significantly reduced. This research suggests that the diminishing ideological divide is not a temporary fluctuation but part of a broader social reconfiguration driven by structural factors. Accordingly, it highlights the need for future North Korea and unification policies to move beyond ideological confrontation toward pragmatic approaches and bipartisan cooperation. Emphasis is placed on strategies that foster common ground across diverse societal groups to build a more cohesive basis for public consensus on inter-Korean issues.
