Abstract
This paper aims to draw implications through a comparative analysis of North Korea’s response and cooperation to transnational epidemics since the 2000s. The international community’s support and cooperation with North Korea regarding transboundary epidemics has been relatively limited. Facing global health crises caused by transboundary infectious diseases. North Korea has made significant efforts to prevent the entry of infectious diseases into the country through lockdowns, tightened immigration quarantine, and quarantine of suspected infectious diseases. Regarding issues of transboundary infectious diseases, there are few examples of systemic and comprehensive assistance and cooperation with North Korea. The limited cooperation on transboundary infectious diseases has several characteristics. First, there are differences in the regional incidence and spread of transboundary infectious diseases, which leads to differences in support and cooperation. Second, there are differences in the international community’s support and cooperation with North Korea based on North Korea’s responses and needs. Third, compared to countries with similar economic capability, the international community’s supports to North Korea over health care issues have been limited. Since North Korea understands the necessity of cooperation with the international community over transnational infectious diseases, there is a possibility that cooperation in the healthcare sector could resume in the future.
