Abstract
The Arab Spring, which was triggered by a Tunisian young man’s self-immolation in 2010 and rocked the entire Arab world, is a frequently discussed research topic. Most studies evaluate the Arab Spring as a failed social movement, highlighting the lack of a strong civil society that could suggest a direction and alternatives after the revolution. However, as this negative evaluation is based on the concept of civil society developed in the West as well as a top-down approach, it needs to be redefined according to the region’s socio-cultural characteristics and historical context, challenging the universal concept of the western notion of civil society. Based on the re-contextualized concept of civil society with bottom-up approach, this study will reevaluate the result of the Arab Spring to analyze whether it was a failed civil revolution. As it expands the concept of civil society with disorganized and leaderless informality, however, operating at the bottom as a collective power of ordinary citizens’ everyday lives, this study highlights the internal dynamics and flexibility of civil society within the Arab world, especially among the younger generations.
