Abstract

Objective: This study aims to examine the effects of parents’ career preparation activities during high school on adolescents’ career adaptability, and to identify whether parent-child conversation time moderates this relationship. The ultimate goal is to explore the importance of parental involvement and family communication in adolescent career education. Methods: Data were drawn from the fifth wave of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018 (KCYPS 2018), focusing on the middle school cohort. The final sample consisted of 2,223 high school students, including 1,183 boys (53.2%) and 1,040 girls (46.8%). The measures included a career adaptability scale, parental career preparation activity items, and parent-child conversation time items. Data were analyzed using multiple regression and moderation analysis with SPSS 26.0. Results: First, parents’ career preparation activities had a positive effect on high school students’ career adaptability. Second, parent-child conversation time did not directly influence career adaptability but moderated the relationship between parents’ career preparation activities and adolescents’ career adaptability. Specifically, when the level of parent-child conversation time was above the average, parents’ career preparation activities significantly enhanced adolescents’ career adaptability, whereas no significant effect was observed in the low conversation group. Conclusions: These findings suggest the need to link parental career preparation activities with youth programs that encourage parent-child conversations in order to promote adolescents’ career adaptability. In particular, if youth workers collaborate with parents to design parent-participatory activities, it may contribute not only to the enhancement of adolescents’ career adaptability but also to the effectiveness of youth activities.
