초록
During the 1970s, Saemaul Education played a pivotal role in increasing labor productivity, nurturing National Human Resource Development (NHRD), and promoting the accumulation of social capital. Hence why Saemaul Education is considered as a key factor that led to the success of the Saemaul Undong and fundamentally differentiates Saemaul Undong from other countries’ community development. This appraisal of Saemaul Education is followed by interests and expectations of the international community and a demand for research from the perspective of international development cooperation. In particular, in-depth research on Saemaul Education through higher education is required to meet the needs of NHRD in developing countries in the 21st century. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze the mechanism by which Saemaul Education in Korean higher education has contributed to the development of local communities and the country. Based on the analysis results, this research derives implications and insights on strategies and plans to share Saemaul Education with developing countries through higher education. To this end, this paper focused on the case analysis of Yeungnam University’s Saemaul Education through the time series analysis and qualitative research methods. The result is, Yeungnam University’s Saemaul Education has devoted to NHRD while responding flexibly to social changes and the demand of the times. It implies that a multi-dimensional understanding about developing countries in a creative and flexible way is required to share Saemaul Education with developing countries. In addition, this paper attaches a new significance that the utilization value for the development of developing countries can be derived from the experiences in Korea in all fields, including higher education.
