초록

The current world society is interacting in a hyper-connected environment, where social networking sites and the internet bridge the geographic gaps among people. This study aims to indicate the magnitude of the influence of social networking sites on the Civic Engagement of Colombian citizenship. For this cross-sectional research, secondary data were obtained from the National Administrative Department of Statistics of the Republic of Colombia, collected in a National Survey of Political Culture of 2015. The answers were grouped by age and level of education, and indicators of social networking sites use, civic, electoral and political activities were identified from the survey questions. Then a bivariate correlation test was applied to the indicators previously mentioned to discover relationships between the independent and dependent variables. After, multivariable correlations like Pearson’s Chi-square and Cramer’s V coefficient were calculated to identify causality and intensity of the relationship between variables, respectively. Ultimately, a binomial logistic regression was conducted to obtain the enhancement of the probabilities to strengthen the civic, electoral activities, and political voice by using social networking sites.
