초록
This study investigates the role of the traditional institution known as Nkuta in resolving conflict within the Mungule Chiefdom. Nkuta, deeply rooted in the cultural and historical heritage of the Mungule people, plays a crucial role in addressing various societal issues including resource competition, land disputes, trespassing, marital issues, and theft. The study employed a purposive and referral sampling method, involving 30 participants such as the Chieftainess, Headmen, and other community leaders. Data collection utilized semi-structured interviews, and thematic analysis was employed to identify significant patterns. The findings highlight the effectiveness of Nkuta in employing indigenous mediation and reconciliation processes to resolve conflicts. Despite its strengths, the institution faces significant challenges, including a lack of incentives, modern education, and appropriate training, which impede its effectiveness. The study proposes integrating indigenous conflict resolution strategies into broader conflict management frameworks and recommends empowering the capacity of Nkuta to address contemporary challenges while preserving its traditional practices.
