해방직후 어느 노동자의 일상생활 - 인천의 전기공 I씨의 일기로부터

본고는 인천에서 살았던 노동자 I씨가 1945년 9월부터 1947년까지 쓴 일기를 분석함으로써 해방직후의 사회를 살았던 한 서민의 일상사의 일면을 밝히고자하는 것이다. 특히 I씨의 일상생활의 제상(諸相)을 그려내며 I씨가 어떻게 해방을 맞이했는지, 또는 I씨에게 해방이란 무엇이었는지를 생각해보고자 한다. 해방직후 인천의 전기공 I씨는 조선에 들어온 미군을 ‘歡迎’하고, ‘三一運動獨立宣言記念日’, ‘八･一五解放記念日’ 등의 정치적 이벤트에 참가하여 ‘朝鮮解放’을 기뻐하고 ‘朝鮮獨立’을 기원했다. I씨의 직장인 경전 인천지점에서는, 네 차례에 걸쳐 ‘同盟罷業’이 일어났다. I씨는 처음에는 이에 적극적으로 참가했지만, 마지막에는 비판적이 되었다. 생활면에서는 인플레와 식량물자부족이라는 ‘生活難’ 속에서 배급 일을 하는 한편, 의외로 많은 편수의 영화와 연극을 관람했다. 또한 ‘美國’ 영화나 ‘美國’ 상품 등 유･무형의 ‘美國’ 문물을 수용하고 있었다. 그러나 I씨의 일상 속에서 가장 커다란 힘을 지니고 있었던 것은 전통적인 생활양식, 불교, 민간신앙이었다. I씨에게 있어서 ‘解放’이란 해방 후 처음으로 맞이한 구정월 때에 기록된 “아침에 家族이 모다 모여 떡국을 먹는데, 떡심는 소리도 平和다 平和다하는 듯히 이상히 들엿다”라는 글에 가장 잘 드러나 있다. “떡심는 소리”, “平和다 平和다”는 I씨뿐만 아니라, 식민지지배와 전시체제에서 해방된 사람들이 품고 있던 솔직한 기분이었을 것이다. 그러한 전제 하에서 정치적으로는 ‘朝鮮獨立’을 기원하고, 생활 속에서는 장래의 ‘成功’, ‘幸福’, 자신과 가족의 ‘健康’, ‘無故’를 기원했던 것이다.
Abstract
This paper aims to unveil a partial history of the daily life of a commoner who lived in the time immediately after the liberation of Korea by analyzing the diary of Mr. I, a worker in Incheon, from September 1945 to 1947. In particular, we will look at various aspects of Mr. I’s daily life in order to inquire into how Mr. I received the liberation and what it meant to him. Shortly after the liberation, the Incheon electrician Mr. I “welcomed” the U.S. forces stationed in Korea, and participated in political events like “March 1st Declaration of Independence Day” and “August 15th Liberation Day”, celebrating the “liberation of Korea” and hoping for the “independence of Korea.”At Mr. I’s workplace, the Incheon branch of the Gyeongseong Electric Company, workers held “strikes” four times. Mr. I was initially an active participant, but became critical of them in the end. As for his personal life, while he worked in rationing in “hard living conditions” with inflation and food and goods shortage, he also went out to see surprisingly many films and plays. He also enjoyed various tangible and intangible culture of “美国 (Miguk: the United States of America)” such as American movies and products. However, it was the traditional lifestyle, Buddhism and folk beliefs that were most influential in Mr. I’s daily life. Mr. I’s feelings towards the “liberation” is shown most prominently in the sentence that he wrote in the diary on the first Korean New Year after the liberation; “When the whole family gathered in the morning to eat tteokguk (rice cakes in soup), the sound of chewing on tteok sounded as if saying peaceful, peaceful.” “The sound of chewing on tteok” and “peaceful, peaceful” would have been the honest feelings not only of Mr. I, but of all the people liberated from colonial rule and the wartime regime. With such feelings, Mr. I hoped for the “independence of Korea” in terms of politics, and with his own life he hoped for the future “success” and “happiness” and his and his family’s “health” and “safety.”
