Abstract

In this study, the extent of forest fire damage over time was predicted through numerical simulations for the 2022 Uljin-Samcheok forest fire. Also, the area of suppressed forest fire spread through firefighting efforts was checked and compared with the simulated forest fire spread area. Furthermore, a discussion was conducted regarding the establishment method of forest fire containment lines. The simulation results showed that the area is vulnerable to forest fires because it is composed of rugged terrain and pine forests. If there had been no response to the forest fire, it is estimated that approximately 102.3 km² of forest area would have been affected within 29 hours, resulting in significant socio-economic losses due to damage to the nuclear power plant. In the event of large forest fires, it is necessary to establish containment lines along roads to protect lives and critical national infrastructure. Moreover, it is advisable to organize these containment lines into two stages: larger sections utilizing national and local roads, and smaller sections utilizing provincial and forest roads.
