Abstract
Our study aimed to analyze research trends in the high school beauty curriculum by examining studies from the 7th National Curriculum to the 2022 Revised Curriculum. We selected and analyzed 60 studies published in registered and candidate academic journals between 2006 and 2024 using analytical frameworks and the PRISMA methodology. We observed that the research period included in the studies focused mainly on the years when curriculum revisions were implemented. There was a notable increase in the number of studies during the period of the 7th Curriculum that had the longest implementation period; the 2015 Revised Curriculum that incorporated the National Competency Standards (NCS); and the 2022 Revised Curriculum that adopted the high school credit system. With regards to research methods, the number of quantitative and qualitative studies did not significantly differ from each other, although the number of mixed-method studies was extremely limited. The most common subject areas covered in the studies included a wide range of beauty topics, followed by studies on hair, skincare, and makeup. However, there was a noticeable absence of research on nail care, fundamentals of beauty as well as safety and hygiene. With regards to educational focus, curriculum-related studies were the most frequent, followed by research on teaching and learning as well as assessment. Although curriculum revisions undergo rapid and diverse changes to reflect societal trends, our study suggests that there is a need for more diverse research across different topics and educational domains to promote beauty education in vocational high schools.
