English departments of Korean universities have been undergoing great changes in recent years. The educational goals have been modified, reflecting the job-oriented demands of the students. And traditional theoretical courses of literature or linguistics have been substituted for practical language training courses. English professors, no matter what their specialty is, should have a positive attitude toward teaching practical English through literature or linguistic courses. When selecting the text for the course, due consideration should be given to the students' level of English and the most appropriate text to help them improve their English should be chosen. English professors should do their best to develop a lot more concrete and practical teaching methods for the purpose of improving the communicative competence of the students. We, the literature professors, should explore more and more how to teach English literature in connection with the language teaching, particularly, in the undergraduate programs. These are some suggestions: making them summarize a short story into 3 or 4 paragraphs in English; asking them to paraphrase poems; adopting cloze procedure in tests.
