초록

Screen (subtitling) translation is different from the general (literature) translation in that the former is carried out by the conveying meaning system through multiplex channels. Therefore screen translation attaches much importance to the economy principle to overcome the spatio-temporal restrictions and the readability principle to lighten the cognitive load of the audience. And this paper highlights the fact that the screen translation strategies must be based on these two principles. The purpose of this study is to explore economy and readability, the two important principles, through the case study on English-Korean screen translation. The translation sentence examples are divided into two groups -- examples with no context and examples in the context. And following each group, a few exceptions based on the creativity principle are suggested. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the two facts: One is that we are under the necessity of studying on the screen translation because the 21th century is the age of image on screen, and the age of screen translation. The other is that, through the practice of screen translation delivering dynamic equivalence, we can overcome so-called translationese expressions and carry out a successful translation with natural expressions and effective strategies.
