이 글은 현대주의의 “역창조”에 대한 월러스 스티븐슨의 독특한 접근법을 다룬다. 그 접근법은 외부세계에 대한 첫 발상을 깨닫기 위한 목적으로 인간의 통찰력을 제거하는 것이다. 스티븐슨은 우연한 사건과 전통신화에서 타당한 근거가 부족함을 알아차린 현대인들을 위해 실재를 역창조 한다. 허구는 20세기 전반동안 살아있는 우연한 존재를 위해 창조적인 일을 했다. 그렇지만 허구는 우리와 함께 지내는 신화처럼 계속되지도 않고 지속되는 문화의 실재를 통해 예측할 수 있는 것은 더욱이 아닌데, 그러한 점이 일반적으로 허구가 가진 기본성질이다. 그리고 허구는 진리에 대한 인간 이외의 질서를 탄생시키는 것으로써 신을 대신해야만 한다. 부분적으로 우연성의 관점에 대한 이러한 역창조적 변화는 새로운 과학이론의 측면에서 이해될 수 있다.
