초록

This study purports to explore the hysteria in Sarah Ruhl’s In the Next Room, or the vibrator play (2009). Hysteria was manipulated to justify patriarchal repression on women, however, it functions in this play as a means of resistance. Mrs. Givings, who suffers from dysfunctional maternity, seeks to figure out what the problem was with her and other patients of hysteria. Her efforts to understand and respect others’ pain ultimately lead her to the realization that beyond socially-assigned duty, there is intimacy that contributes to not only curing the illness, but also achieving a truly harmonious interpersonal relationships. She stands for women’s efforts to fight against unfair conventions in their own ways and to defy social oppressions to obtain subjectivity and autonomy.
