초록

This paper focuses on the compliments and the compliment responses in American culture through a drama, "Friends." It aims to help understand the differences in the speech act, especially compliment speech act, cross-culturally. I approach Gricean Maxims and Politeness Theory and the specialities of each culture. The results of the study are as follows: (1)In terms of compliments, truthfulness and solidarity are most frequently shown in American culture. It implies its rational aspect more than an emotional one. Also, Americans use the compliments as a tool to connect people, which is solidarity. (2) In compliment responses, acceptance has the highest rate, which represents the importance of individuality and self-image. By contrast, in eastern countries, rejection and scaling down are mostly shown. Based on the results of the study, cultural and social factors should be carefully considered in cross-cultural communications in addition to language structural and semantic factors.
