The Impact of Time Limit Conditions on Korean EFL Learners' Performance in Computer-based Reading Comprehension Tests

본 연구는 읽기영역 시험에서 다른 시간의 제약이 한국인 EFL 학습자들의 읽기 시험 점수에 미치는 영향을 밝히고, 학습자들의 영어 능숙도에 따라 각기 다른 시간제한 조건에서 나타나는 차이를 비교하기위해 시행되었다. 본 연구에서는 세 가지의 각기 다른 시간 제약을 주어 시험을 시행하였으며, 이는 1) 전체 문제에 대한 총 시간 배정, 2) 각 문항 지문의 난이도에 따라 각기 다른 시간 배정, 그리고 3) 각 문항 지문의 난이도와 상관없이 각각 같은 시간 배정이다. 학생들의 점수를 분석한 결과, 시간 할당 조건이 학습자들의 영어 읽기 시험 성적에 영향을 미칠 수 있으며, 이러한 영향은 학습자들의 능숙도에 따라 다른 양상을 보일 수 있다는 것으로 나타났다. 상위 학습자들의 경우, 각 문항별 제한 시간이 주어졌을 때 부정적인 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 반면, 하위 학습자들의 경우에는 각 문항별로 시간이 제한될 때 약간의 성적 향상이 있을 수 있는 것으로 나타났다. 각 시간 제약 조건 별 학습자들이 느끼는 불안수준에 대한 설문 결과, 각 문항별 시간 제약이 난이도에 따라 다른 경우에 가장 높은 긴장도를 보이는 것으로 나타났다.
