초록

Women writers composing their works on the fringe of society has historically signaled their entering into the public world of letters. When critics consider those days in the 1790's, feminine writing created a new set of cultural values that unified the social, political, and economical meanings beyond just literature. Thus, the issue of working-class women’s writing needs to focus on the social, emotional, and political problems in relation to the integrated cultural effect. The main thesis recognizes the exclusion of women during the revolutionary period of the 1790’s with the support of humankind’s inherent rights advocated through the French Revolution. This paper researches working-class women’s written works and examines their efforts to overcome their surroundings through their writing over the subjection of women, followed by specific texts of Ann Yearsley and Elizabeth Bentley. This paper reflects on the writing strategy of working class women by focusing on the texts of both poets. Yearsley and Bentley constitute an emerging gendered tradition of blue-collar poets committed to new formulations of patriotism and national identity, raising significant issues of class and gender as part of that identity. Working-class women’s writing in the 1790’s was an attempt to open the possibilities of cultural change by recognizing women’s public roles and resisting the social norm of viewing class and gender as being inferior.
