The Impact of the Peace Corps Program on English Education in Korea

1961년 케네디 대통령에 의해 추진된 평화봉사단 프로그램은 한국의 경우 1966년에 시작되어 15년간의 한국 활동을 마치고 1981년 종료되었다. 여러 가지 사업 중에서 가장 큰 비중을 차지했던 것은 TEFL 영어 프로그램인 바, MFT (methodology for teachers)를 개발 보급함으로써 당시로서는 아주 생소한 구어영어 학습방법을 소개하는 데 큰 기여를 하였다. 이 논문은 평화봉사단의 TEFL이 한국 영어교육에 어떻게 영향을 끼쳤으며, 이것이 평화봉사단 프로그램의 목적인 양 국민 사이의 상호이해 증진 문제와는 어떠한 관계로 작용하였는가에 관한 연구이다. 이를 위해 Kailian (1980)의 설문조사 자료의 분석을 이용하였으며, 이에 의하면 한국의 영어교사와 학생들 모두가 평화봉사단이 소개한 의사소통 중심의 영어 학습방법에서 매우 긍정적인 효과를 얻은 것으로 나타나 있다. 그러나 실제에 있어서는 1979년 당시 영어실력테스트의 성적 결과에서 보듯이, MFT를 도입한 TEFL이 한국영어교육의 풍토를 바꿔 놓을 정도의 획기적 영향을 주지 못한 것으로 나타났다.
