The Body on Stage: A Political Critique of the Visibility of the Privacy in Tony Kushner’s Angels in America, Part I: Millennium Approaches

본 연구는 토니 쿠쉬너의 희곡 『미국의 천사들: 제 1부』가 텍스트와 퍼포먼스 전반에 걸쳐 몸의 가시성을 부각시켰으며 그것을 통해 극이 의도한 정치적인 이슈를 효과적으로 전달한다는 점을 증명하려는 시도이다. 본 연구는 미쉘 푸코의 담론 이론을 빌려 작품 속 이성애 담론이 개인의 사적인 몸을 공공의 영역에 가시화시키는 지점들을 분석하였다. 에이즈에 감염된 동성애자의 몸을 대표하는 두 주인공 로이 콘과 프라이어 왈터의 몸은 이성애 담론의 작용 즉, 몸에 나타난 에이즈 증상을 개인의 섹슈얼리티로 동일시하면서 사적 영역을 박탈하는 담론의 폭력을 가시화한다. 그러나 극은 바로 그 몸의 가시성을 연극적인 장치로 활용하여 무대 위의 연기하는 몸과 관객의 지켜보는 몸이 맞물려 비평적인 담론이 생산될 수 있는 전복적인 지점으로 만든다. 초현실적인 장치와 그 속에서 극화된 몸을 통해, 극은 사적 영역을 박탈당한 몸에서 그것을 지켜보는 관객의 몸의 안정성을 흔드는 위협적인 몸으로 몸의 가시성의 의미와 효과를 전환시킨다. 따라서 몸의 가시성은 작품의 정치적인 의의를 이해하는데 있어서 텍스트와 무대 모두에서 유의미한 지점으로 해석할 수 있다.
