In The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne endeavors to get over the Puritan community’s contradictions and root out the male-dominated society’s evils by the heroine Hester having a free will. In conclusion, Hester and Jane have a free will and some aspects in common in the point of living actively and independently in the inconsistent world without giving up society’s prejudice and injustice of the day.
