초록
It has been argued that the data for ESP studies should be authentic in order to capture distinctive linguistic behaviors in reality and to make pedagogical use of the results of the analyses. In particular, the importance of authentic data can be said to be greater for less studied varieties of English such as military English. This study discusses the authenticity and qualifications of data for ESP studies, analyzing military news texts on the same topics from two different sources, Navy News and Navy Times. The findings of this study indicate that i) both news share a number of linguistic features in terms of form and style in general, which can be explained by the fact that both texts are related to and follow news conventions, ii) these news texts show differences in measures of complexity and adherence to naval conventions: Navy News consistently pursues simplicity and follows naval practice, which can be said to be characteristics of military English.
