열반경의 정치철학적 함의

열반경은 정치철학적 함의를 풍부하게 가지고 있다. 대승열반경의 불성(佛性) 사상은 인간의 존재를 부처님의 지위로 고양시켰다. 이점에서 불성사상은 개인의 존엄성을 바탕으로 발전되어 유엔 인권 선언과 선진 민주국가의 헌법 정신에 구현되고 있는 인간존중과 인권사상의 선구자인 셈이다. 또한 대승열반경이 제시하고 하고 있는 열반의 세계와 현실고의 분석 그리고 이 고통의 세계에서 저 열반의 세계로 가는 방법은 정치이데올로기가 제시해 온 이론들을 정화할 수 있는 모델이 될 수 있다. 정치이데올로기는 대부분 현실고의 원인을 사회구조나 특정 사회집단의 책임으로 돌리고 추구하는 미래상은 구조적 변화가 이루어지고 특수한 집단이 배제된 세계이다.. 그러나 대승열반경은 인간고의 원인을 불성을 보지 못하고 탐∘진∘치에 뒤덮인 인간 심성의 특징에서 찾고 있다. 추구하는 미래상은 대역죄인 일천제까지도 배제하지 않고 구원되는 상∘락∘아∘정의 세계다. 미래상을 추구하는 방법은 당사자는 도가 깊어지고 상대방에게는 도움이 되는 자리이타의 행으로 사무량심과 육바라밀이다. 대승열반경이 정치이데올로기를 인도할 수 있다면 정치세계를 바로 이끄는데 크게 기여할 것이다. 초기열반경 또한 칠불쇠퇴법(七不衰退法)과 승가 공동체의 운영방식을 설하고 있어 원칙과 합의에 의해 운영되는 선진 민주국가의 공화주의 운영방식에 많은 시사점을 제시한다.
Abstract
Nirvana sutras have abundant implications for the political philosophy. The idea of Buddha-nature of the Mahayana Nirvana Sutra elevated human being to the level of the Buddha. In this respect, the idea is the forgoer of respect for human dignity and human rights in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and human rights provisions in the basic laws of the developed democracies. Mahayana Nirvana-sutra also tells us what the main causes of human sufferings are, what the vision of the future is, and what men should do to actualize the vision. The political ideologies generally ascribe the causes of human sufferings to certain social system or social groups. Their future visions tend to be the society in which the existing social system is transformed and some groups or individuals are eliminated. The Mahayana Nirvana-sutra ascribes the human suffering to the lack of enlightenment of Buddha nature and three fires of human greed, anger and ignorance. The vision of the sutra is the world of 常∘樂∘我∘淨 eternity, bliss, personality, and purity where even icchantikas, the most devilry persons also should be redeemed by recovering their Buddha-nature. In the sutra, the future vision is actualized by awakening Buddha-nature in every man's mind and practicing the bodhisattva path. If the Mahayana Nirvana-sutra is able to guide the political ideologies, the politics in the world would be greatly improved and purified. The Nirvana-sutra of Pali version includes the teachings of the seven no-decline laws for Vajji republic in the face of aggression and some principles for the operation of Sangha community. We can get some hint from the teachings for the current republican operation of the developed nations.
