지난세기 후반 영토성의 위기와 함께 탈근대 질서가 주목받았다면, 오늘날은 지정학(geopolitics)이 다시 부각되면서 포스트-탈근대 패러다임이 관심의 대상이 되고 있다. 안보 공공재를 제공하는 국제리더십 부재 및 초국적 협력 마비가 상당기간 지속되고 있다. 배타적 내셔널리즘이 부상하고, 이방인 혐오와 차별이 심해지는 상황에서 환대와 공생을위한 실천은 어떻게 모색되어야 하는가. 본 논문은 이방인 환대와 공생을 향한 세계시민주의 규범과 민주적 자결 원칙을 조화시킨 벤하비브 작업을 재검토한다. 먼저 벤하비브의 세계시민주의 기획을 논의하고, 그녀의 기대를 지속적으로 배반하는 상황을 살펴본다. 민주적 자결 원칙이 보편인권규범을 증진하기보다 폐쇄적이고 배타적인 자세를 나타내는 모습을 ‘비자유주의적 민주주의’와 종교정치 포퓰리즘 맥락에서 이해한다. 끝으로인간의 보편도덕 규범과 계몽 합리성(로고스) 일변도 접근을 넘어 ‘상생하는 공동체’를 모색하는 내러티브와 집단신화(뮈토스)의 역할에 주목한다. 실천적으로는 주류문화를 점유한 이들과 낯선 타자들이 ‘상생’하는데 있어 문화적·종교적 결사체의 역할 재고와 담론 재구성에 관심을 가진다.
Abstract
This study reviews Benhabib’s attempt to harmonize cosmopolitan norms and democratic self-determination principles. Next, it examines the situation in which Benhabib’s expectations are continuously betrayed. It is understood in the context of “illiberal democracy” and religious-political populism in which the democratic self-determination principles show a closed and exclusive attitude rather than promoting the universal human rights norms. Finally, this study analyzes the role of collective myth(mythos) for narratives for a co-prosperity of community beyond the universal moral norms and the unilateral approach of human rationality (logos). In this regard, it highlights the need to rebuild the common social imaginaries in forming a society beyond the illusion of homogeneous society in a diversified world. In practice, more attention should be given to reconsidering the role of cultural and religious associations and reconstructing discourse in “co-prosperity” of those who occupy the mainstream culture and the others.
