The ever-globalizing world requires new ways of thinking about modern society. Two ways of thinking about it have come to our attention. Since late nineteenth century, multi-culturalism has functioned as a powerful critique of nation-state centrism, while its political expression, identity politics, has personalized politics. Yet multi-culturalism could not escape from essential categorization of human existence. Even Appiah’s more measured and complex cosmopolitanism may prove to be encapsulated in the modernist framework that produced the very nation-state centrism. Growing appeal of transnationalism is testament to the necessity of new conceptualization of modern society. Though it embodies the danger of justifying globalization by financial as well as industrial capitalism, trans - nationalism offers new epistemological percepts, through which history and modern society can be viewed.
