Abstract
The expressionist film is a characteristic cultural style of the Weimar Republic. This film genre has been recognized both for its artistry and popularity. It also has been exported to the world as a leading German film. Expressionist films, however, were filled with all kinds of bizarre characters and events. The unique camerawork and set design were hard to find until then. All of these seem to reflect social anxieties of the time. The Weimar Republic that was established in the early 20th century was affected by massive anxieties across the entire society. Rapid social changes, the Great war and defeats, economic emergencies, and the crisis of sexual morality have all contributed to these social anxieties. These were directly or indirectly reflected in various media, and the most popular medium was the film at that time. The expressionist film, especially, which was an attempt to visualize human emotion or inner world, is the best way to show visualized anxiety as well as how anxiety is visualized. Therefore, this article explores the anxieties in German during the period of the Weimar Republic through an analysis of Weimar expressionist films. In particular, this paper focused on the symbols and appearances of anxiety in various aspects such as narrative structure, plot, shooting and editing technique of film, use of lighting, and acting of actors in films. This study contributes to a better understanding of the anxieties of Weimar Republic and offers a new perspective on the interactions between media and emotions.
