Abstract
The transition from the Cold War era to the post-Cold War era in South Korea was a complex intertwining of the ‘post-Cold War from above’ that unfolded at the level of international politics and the ‘post-Cold War from below’ that unfolded at the level of people's lives. Therefore, the path and characteristics of the post-Cold War transition can be summarized by comprehensively examining the process created by the intertwining of the two streams of the post-Cold War. This article focuses on the agendas of community and self-governance in order to understand the post-Cold War from below, which has not been properly studied so far. The reason why we should focus on community is that the post-Cold War from below in Korea focused mainly on the dismantling of existing communities and the formation of new ones. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the post-Cold War began in earnest at the global level, the forces of the people's and democratic movements in Korea formed ideological sharing and practical solidarity to overcome the double crisis caused by continued division and predatory modernization, and paved the way for the post-Cold War transition from below. As a result, the concepts of self-government, life, peace and reunification were organically linked and had multiple and multi-layered implications. The characteristics and dynamics of South Korea's ‘post-Cold War from below’ can be found here.
