Abstract
This study explores translation strategies that preserve the cultural identity embedded in Korean dish names while enhancing communicative clarity in the global market, with particular focus on implicit cultural information. To this end, dish names listed in ⟨A Guide to the Foreign Language Translations of 800 Korean Dishes⟩ were categorized into explicit and implicit types, and their English translations were analyzed based on cultural specificity and semantic transparency. The study finds that phonetic transliteration, while effective in preserving authenticity, often lacks transparency; free and literal translations offer higher semantic clarity but may distort the original cultural nuances. As a compromise, the study suggests that hybrid translations can be an effective alternative. However, the choice of strategy should be informed by ‘the degree of cultureme specificity’ and whether the term refers to ‘a dish category’ or ‘a specific dish type’. It is further argued that translation consistency must be reinforced through standardized practices and broader inclusion of food terms in bilingual dictionaries. This study emphasizes that translating food names should be approached as a form of cultural curation rather than mere linguistic conversion. The significance of this research lies in proposing effective translation strategies for the global dissemination of Korean cuisine.
