역사에 결락된 기록의 총체, 『震閥彙攷續編』의 의의와 그 한계 - 제4책을 중심으로

『震閥彙攷續編』은 일본 동경대학 소장본으로 『震彙續攷』와 연관을 지니면서도 7冊 50篇目 1,007條目으로 구성된 비교적 온전한 형태의 문헌이라고 하겠다. 특히 4책은 장지연본 『진휘속고』와 유사성을 가지고 있어 두 책의 관련성을 살필 수 있었으며, 책에 실린 긴 편의 서사물들은 편찬자의 의도가 드러나는 특징을 가졌다. 이를 살펴 본 결과 다음과 같은 결론에 도달할 수 있었다. 첫째, 『진벌휘고속편』의 편찬자는 4책을 통해 불교의 전파과정과 발전과정 등 우리나라 불교의 전반적인 역사를 두루 다루고 있다. 이는 4책을 통해 불교사를 알기 쉽게 사람들에게 알리고자 한 편찬자의 의도라고 하겠다. 둘째, 4책의 각 편목에는 각각의 편목에 부합되는 일화를 제시하고 있었다. 보우의 경우 부정적인 승려 중의 한 사람으로 평가된다. 이 인물이 죽은 후 말이 되었다는 일화를 제시하여 불교의 육도윤회 사상을 언급하고 있다는 것이 그 예라고 하겠다. 셋째, 편찬자는 『진벌휘고속편』 4책에서 인물 본연의 가치를 부각하고 있다. 긍정적인 인물이든 부정적인 인물이든, 역사에 기록되어 있는 인물이든 역사에 결락되어 있는 인물이든 신분의 높고 낮음을 따지지 않고 인물 본연의 가치를 존중한 특징을 가졌다. 넷째, 『진벌휘고속편』 4책은 역사적 인물뿐만 아니라 역사의 전면에 등장하지 못해 결락된 인물들에 이르기까지 다양한 인물의 역사를 담아내고자 했다. 하지만 일부 서술에서는 인용문헌을 제대로 제시하지 않은 한계를 지니고 있다고 하겠다.
Abstract
The Jinbeoluigosokpyeon is housed at Tokyo University in Japan. Being related to Jinhuisokgo, this work of literature keeps its original form relatively completely with seven books, 50 catalogues, and 1,008 articles. Of these, Book 4 has special familiarity to the Jangjiyeon version of Jinhuisokgo, and is useful to compare their connection. The relatively long narrative works are characterized by the revelations of their compiler's intention. This study examined those revelations and reached the following conclusions: First, the compiler of the Jinbeoluigosokpyeon covered the nation's overall history with relation to Buddhism, including its spread and the development process, in Book 4. His intention for Book 4 was to promote the easy understanding of Buddhist history among the people. Second, each catalogue of Book 4 provides a corresponding episode. Bowoo is considered a negative Buddhist monk. In the course of telling the episode of him turning into a horse after his death, for instance, Book 4 mentions six realms of reincarnation in Buddhism. Third, the compiler highlighted figures based on their character traits in Book 4 of the Jinbeoluigosokpyeon. He focused on their natural character, regardless of their social class standing, focusing on whether they were of positive or negative character, and also if they were recorded or missed in history. Finally, Book 4 of the Jinbeoluigosokpyeon contained the history of various people, including those who were not known in history, as well as historic figures, which is significant as it reflects the compiler's intention of respecting their natural value. The book, however, has its share of limitations by not providing the correct reference literature for some descriptions.
