이 논문에서 필자는 “문화와 욕망 사이에서” 서로에게 “부재하는 대화 상대자”인 문화 연구와 정신분석의 상호 포함관계가 무엇인가를 밝히고자 했다. 우선, 하나(문화 연구/정신분석)가 다른 하나(정신분석/문화 연구)를 위한 ‘토대’로 기능하는 일종의 수렴점을 보여주는 것은 타당하지 않다고 생각하여, 양자의 관계를 어떤 분명한 존재론적 ‘속성’에 의해 선험적으로 판단하여 문화 연구에서 정신분석을 배척하기보다는, 서로 연계된 이론적 또는 실천적 문제를 성찰하고 서로에게 어떤 도움을 줄 수 있는가라는 기여점을 부각시키고자 했다. 그동안 문화 연구가 정신분석을 배척한 이유는 무의식의 지위(‘장소성’)에 대한 경험주의적 곡해로 인한 것이었으며, 역설적으로 정신분석은 심리세계의 구조적 결정인이 사회적 행위를 동기화하고 문화 형태의 재생산을 가능케 한다는 차원에서 문화 연구에 방법적으로 기여할 수 있음을 논증하였다. 또한 문화 연구가 우리 개인사의 문화적 지평을 확대함으로써 정신분석에 치료적으로 도움이 될 수 있는 기술이나 프로그램을 개발할 수 있게끔 한다는 것을 필자의 임상 경험을 통해 확인했다. 그러고 나서 정신분석과 문화 연구는 그 뿌리로부터 ‘기억’과 ‘망각’의 교차 또는 엇물림의 형상으로 연계되어 있다고 결론지었다. 정신분석은 주체가 (심적 외상으로부터 벗어나 그것을 삭여) 망각하도록 도와주기 위해 (주로 유년기의) 기억을 이용하는 ‘임상 실천(clinical praxis)’인 반면, 문화 연구는 주체가 일종의 기억으로서 타자와의 관계를 기록하고 체계화하기 위해, 현재를 망각하도록 돕는 ‘현장 조사(fieldwork)’라는 것이다.
Abstract
This article is a study woven in the form of a dialogue between cultural studies and psychoanalysis, it shuttles between disciplines and looks into their mutual implication whose “absent interlocutors” - in the field as in the treatment setting - are subject to what we calls the complex play of culture and desire. First of all, it is not enough to show points of convergence, on discipline(cultural studies) serving as context for the other(psychoanalysis). As an alternative, I’m willing to focus on mutual contributions in a broader politic, not in terms of distinct ontological attributes. Returning to the methodological problem that is the position of the unconscious for cultural studies, I prefigured some of the potential benefits of a psychoanalytic method of exploring just how the horizontal axis of cultural meaning intersects with the vertical axis of personal history. The psychoanalytically imformed method, i. e. “case histories” is to explain the reproduction of cultural forms and the motivation of social actions that have been determined by psychodynamics between subjects and objects in the level of the psychical and the social. To this point I have been talking mainly of the use psychoanalytic method to benefit cultural studies, I made some comments on the inverse debt: symbolic effectiveness of cultural studies to psychoanalytic therapy thru my clinical experiences. Conclusively, I could speak of the relationship between psychoanalysis and cultural studies as having something to do with the relationship between “memory” and “forgetting”. Psychoanalysis could be defined as “clinical praxis” which uses memory, or tries to use memory, in order to a human being to forget it and to tolerate psychic trauma, while cultural studies could be defined as “fieldwork” which helps the subject to forget the present, in order to record the relationship with the other as a kind of memory.
