고독과 빈곤의 조우, 혹은 환대의 경계: 한국 대학생 봉사 여행에서의 주체 형성에 대한 소고

이 연구는 한국 대학생의 해외봉사여행에서 맺어지는 주체와 타자의 문제를 공간성, 주체성, 관계성의 관점에서 분석하고, 그 바탕 위에서 한국 대학생의 해외봉사 활동에 내재한 주체 형성 방식에 대해 논한다. 한국 대학생의 해외봉사활동이란 현실사회에서 자기를 스스로 이해할 수 없고 해명할 수 없으며, 자신을 설명할 언어를 획득하지 못한 ‘불투명성’에 대한 인식에서 비롯한다. 광포한 한국사회의 탐욕스럽고 비대한 타인들 사이에서, 불우한 자의 고독은 심화되고 언어는 상실된다. 불우한 주체는 자폐와 실어에 갇히게 된다. 그러한 불우한 주체에게 있어 고독을 극복하기 위한 도구이자 탈출구로서 타자가 더욱 절실히 요구되고 열망될 것이다. 이 때 여행이 제시하는 타지의 낯선 이들은 단지 미지와 신비의 대상에 그치는 것은 아니다. 고독과 고통에 매여 있었던 불우한 주체는 빈곤한 타자를 우회함으로써 자기의 존재성을 규명하고 표현할 수 있는 자기-내러티브를 만들고자 하는 것이다. 혐오와 공포와 같은 감각의 정치로부터 완전히 자유로울 수는 없지만, 봉사여행은 참여자들이 속한 사회에서 감각의 과잉과 급진화를 통해 대안적 가치를 상상하고 수행할 수 있는 장소를 만들어준다. 그 장소의 의미는 불안정성과 비고착성에 있다. 봉사활동 여행은 감각 작용을 통해 신체적으로 형성되고 써내려가는 자기-내러티브화 과정이다. 여행에서 불우한 주체는 연결/차단, 대면/회피의 경계선을 위험스럽게 맴돌고 때로는 해체하면서 타자와의 관계 맺기를 통한 자기 형성의 기획을 조심스럽게 수행해 나간다.
Abstract
This study analyses self-other relations in voluntary service traveling in terms of spatiality, subjectivity and relationality. For Korean university students, their aspiration for traveling abroad, especially volunteering service in Asian developing countries, is rooted from their everyday conflict and struggle against the given neoliberal society. They can hardly fInd their own language which enables them to give account of the self, only to be doomed to autism and loss of self-language. Traveling towards the poor other becomes something, a detour through which one may escape from his/her solitude. The poor other in neibour countries is not a mystified object so much as the support for the unfortunate other to come into being and find language to express his/herself. The traveller cannot entirely free from disgust and fear for the poor other they meet during the travelling. Nevertheless, by means of facing and being mixed with the poor and sick other, s/he is enabled to create his/her own ‘place’. The unfortunate other's traveling towards to the poor other, hence, is constitutive of the process of self-narrating.
