경찰공무원이 높은 자아존중감을 갖고 있어 자신의 가치와 중요성을 인식하고 그 조직 구성원으로서 만족과 자부심을 느낀다면, 그들은 국민의 공복으로서 소명의식과 책임감을 가지고 업무에 적극적인 자세로 임하게 될 것이다. 그러나 자아존중감이 개인 및 사회에 미치는 긍정적인 효과에도 불구하고 이전의 선행연구는 유아나 청소년기를 자아존중감이 형성되는 시기라고 보고 이들을 대상으로 한 연구에 집중되어 있었다. 따라서 이 연구에서는 경찰공무원들의 자아존중감을 대인관계에 초점을 맞추어 이들의 관계를 분석하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 2009년 1월 24일부터 2월 28일까지 특별시와 광역시 및 도 단위의 16개 지역에 위치한 경찰서 235개소에서 근무하는 경위이하 경찰공무원 560명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하여 얻은 자료를 연구분석에 이용하였다. 연구결과 업무능력의 평균점수는 11.48로 5-15의 범위에서 중간보다 다소 높은 것으로 나타났으며 자기결정력의 평균은 10.69로 6-15의 범위 내에서 보통 수준인 것으로 나타났다. 이 연구의 독립변인인 동료와의 관계의 평균은 7.50으로 2-10의 범위에서 중간보다 다소 높은 것으로 나타났으며 상사와의 관계 역시 14.46으로 4-20의 범위에서 중간 이상 인 것으로 나타났다. 또한 경찰공무원의 자아존중감의 평균은 11.66으로 6-15의 범위에서 중간 이상인 것으로 나타났다. 회귀분석 결과 경찰공무원은 동료와의 관계가 긍정적이라고 인식할수록 자아존중감을 높게 인식하는 것으로 나타났다. 마찬가지로 경찰공무원의 상사와의 원만한 관계도 자아존중감에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과는 청소년의 학교 친구 및 또래 그리고 부모와의 원만한 관계가 긍정적인 자아존중감의 형성 및 발달에 영향을 미친다는 선행연구의 결과와 연결될 수 있다. 또한 이러한 결과들은 청소년과 같이 경찰공무원도 공조직의 구성원으로서 조직 내에서 일정한 관계를 맺고 이러한 관계가 그들의 자아존중감에 영향을 미친다는 것을 반영하며 경찰공무원의 조직 내 대인관계 증진의 필요성을 의미한다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of interpersonal relations on police officers` self-esteem by using survey data. Self-esteem reflects a person`s overall self-appraisal of their own worth. Although, self-esteem is known to have significant impact on various factors, there are a few researches about police officer's self-esteem. The data for this study were collected through surveys conducted on 413 police officers in 235 police agency. The findings of this study are as follows: First, multiple regression analysis showed that age was negatively related to self-esteem, whereas competence was positively related to that. Second, the primary finding suggest that this model showed that level of interpersonal relations were a significant predictor of police officers` self-esteem. Consistent with hypotheses, relation with co-worker was positively related to self-esteem. Relatio with superior also affects self-esteem positively. This implied that interpersonal skills would be effective for enhancing police officers` self-esteem.
