Abstract

Jürgen Moltmann, born in 1926, became widely known for hisTheology of hope. He finds the initial source of his theology in his experience ofGod when he was a prisoner during the World War II. This was anexperience both of God as the power of hope and of God’spresence in suffering. He was a man who experienced the WorldWar II personally, how the war was filled with misery and the fearof death. He himself was a prisoner during the war and came to knowGod when he read the Psalms and the Gospel of Mark in a tractgiven by a U.S. Armed Forces chaplain. He became a Christianand found that Christ is ‘Hope of glory’(Col 1:27). Why is Christ a hope? The Gospel emphasized that Christwon over death by being raised from the death on the Cross. TheChurch suffers (Acts 23:6) on this earth because of this hope that the dead is resurrected. Suffering is an event in itself on the cross according to JürgenMoltman. The opposite of hope Moltman sees as despair andPride, which are produced by despair self in representative things. The Latin words, ‘expectare, opperiri, manere’ express awaiting for something and for everybody. It means ‘prepares andstands to adopt what it is’(zum Empfang bereit stehen). Jürgen Moltman finds the basis of his eschatology of hope inthe covenant of the Word of God and the promise, the revelationand the events of the exodus and the resurrection. Christ is themain point and focus of his eschatology of hope. In this case he inherits the reformation theology, which isvisible in Karl Barth’s theology. So, he refuses theology whichcomes from the speculative philosophy of Greece. On the otherhand, he asserts that ‘The cross in suffering and the gloriousResurrection’ shall be connected with the occurrences that happenin the world in order to change worldly thoughts to the hope offaith. This is the positive emphasis of Moltman's theology and heaccepts Bultmann's existential theology naturally. Then, what willbe the end in reality?Jürgen Moltman differentiates himself from the transcendentalfocus of Barth, the existential focus of Bultmann, the valuingemphasis of Althaus and the German ideal eschatology that isinfluenced by Greek philosophy. It is a ‘revealed end’ (offenbarendeEndzeit) that is based on God which Israel experienced. So, Moltman’s understanding of God is ‘the coming God’ (derkommende Gott). And we await the freeing from the slavery of ourbodies with other creatures(Rom 8:23).
