Abstract

Paul Tillich is one of those Christian theologians who have seriously invested one’s life to examine the question of the relation of religion to culture. Tillich tried to find a creative synthesis between culture and religion with the concept of “theonomy.” In the twenties and thirties religious socialism, for Tillich, was an appropriate response in terms of Christian social ethics. He believed that religious socialism can reconstruct the politically and socially distorted post-World War I Germany and to present a ‘new’ path for restructuring the world as a whole. The purpose of this study lies in exploring Paul Tillich’s concept of religious socialism. In order to appreciate the nature and magnitude of Paul Tillich's religious socialism, this paper begins with a summary of Tillich's idea of religious socialism in terms of the Protestant principle, which is the kernel of Tillich’s theological system(section II). Then, in next section, I explore Tillich’s interpretation of history focusing on his book The Socialist Decision(Section III). In the final section, I argue Tilich’s religious socialism is still a valuable method in resisting demonization and profanization of the world. According to Tillich, religious socialism is based on the prophetic attitude, which seeks a synthesis of the sacramental attitude and the rational attitude. In this prophetic attitude, we find a common ground between religious socialism and the protestant principle. The Protestant principle protests against all naïve belief of perfection in history, the tragic demonic self-elevation of human beings, and the profanizationn of human culture. In the Socialist Decision, Tillich tried to lay out the true meaning of historical dialectic and the theoretical foundation of religious socialism. If religious socialism can be identified with the theonomous socialism that is finitude oriented toward its unconditional ground, it can be the hope and possibility of truly transforming human society, a kairos. Of course, socialism has lost its power and influence today. However, Tillich’s spirit of religious socialism, which is nothing other than the protestant principle, still a valuable means to resist to divinize or to profane any element of human or historic reality.
