세계관 개념에 대한 신학적 비판 : 칼 바르트의 『교회교의학』을 중심으로

독일 관념론 철학에서 처음 사용되기 시작한 세계관 개념은 오늘날 한국교회가 사용하는 언어에도 깊이 들어와 있다. 세계관 개념이 가진 포괄성과 효용성 때문인지, 기독교적 관점에서 학문 활동을 하는 곳에서세계관 개념이 사용되는 사례를 많이 발견할 수 있다. 하지만 기독교 세계관이라는 표현이 일반화되고 유행이 된 것에 비해 세계관 개념에 대한 밀도 있고 진지한 신학적인 성찰은 오히려 찾아보기가 쉽지 않다. 게다가 한국 그리스도인들이 세계관 개념을 이해하고 활용하는 데는 현대북미 복음주의 신학자들, 더 거슬러 올라가면 이들에게 영향을 준 19세기 네덜란드 개혁파 신학자들의 영향이 매우 크다. 이러한 맥락에서 본연구는 독일과 스위스에서 활동했던 20세기 대표적 개신교 신학자 칼바르트의 『 교회교의학』 을 통해 세계관 개념에 대한 신학적 비판을 소개하고자 한다. 바르트는 세계관을 추상적이고 인간 중심적인 개념으로보았던 것으로 유명하다. 이러한 비판은 세계관 투쟁을 통해 권력을 획득하고 폭력을 정당화했던 독일의 나치 시대, 그리고 세계관을 가지고체제 경쟁을 동서 냉전 시대를 배경으로 이뤄졌다. 본 연구는 기존의 개념사 연구와 달리 바르트의 세계관 비판 이면의 정치·역사적 배경을 강조하고, 더 나아가 바르트 신학에서 은혜의 복음이 세계관에서 자유로운 사람됨을 형성하는 방식을 보여주고자 한다.
Abstract
The word ‘worldview’(Weltanschauung), a term whose first usage can be traced back to German idealism in the late 18th century, is deeply embedded in the language used by Korean Christians today. Due to its inclusiveness and effectiveness in theory and practice, the concept is widely utilized in varied disciplines, including politics, economics, philosophy, history, education, and even natural science. Korean Christianity’s reception of it has been largely influenced by modern North American Evangelicals, who were in turn heavily dependent upon the 19th-century Dutch Reformed theologians. Despite its importance and frequent uses at the time, the concept’s development, and the critique of it, by German-speaking theologians in the pre- and post-world war period received relatively less attention. This study will introduce Karl Barth’s theological critique of the concept of the worldview with a focus on his Church Dogmatics. Barth viewed the concept as abstract and human-centered. His attack on it took place in the Nazi period, as Hitler used his racial worldview to gain power and justify violence. Barth tackled this issue again during the Cold War era, a tragic time when the world was divided by the ideological competition of different worldviews. In short, this research will demonstrate that Barth’s criticism of the idea of worldview appeared against the backdrop of political crises in Europe, a crucial theme that previous studies have not sufficiently shown. It will further explore how the gospel of grace shapes the freedom of Christians to the extent that they live joyfully and gratefully in this world even without depending on a particular worldview.
