Abstract

This paper examines the term “delusions of grandeur” coined by Freud and asserts that ‘humanism’, up until transhumanism, has not been able to break free from the delusion of regarding itself as the measure, scale, and center of all things within the realm of homo sapiens. The changing perceptions of the external and internal worlds have brought ontological shocks to human self-understanding, prompting questions about what it means to be human. While traditional theological anthropology has sought to address this inquiry through the concept of the image of God (imago dei), this paper critically aims to restrain the potential misuse of the concept as a basis for humanism that emphasizes human distinctiveness and superiority. It seeks to rectify the misconceptions inherent in the notion of the image of God and proposes the concept of “homo humus” as a balanced and corrective understanding of human anthropology within Christian theology. Homo humus is derived from the biblical testimony that God created the first human (Adam) from the dust of the earth (apar of adamah) (Genesis 2:7) and that “you are dust, and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19), providing a central motif that shapes the theological understanding of human nature and destiny. In this paper, the researcher presents a theological understanding of human beyond humanism based on homo humus, revealing the horizon of meaning inherent in homo humus that encompasses the possibility of addressing various contemporary challenges and questions raised today.
