Abstract
William Harvey(1578~1657) lived in the seventeenth century, often referred to as the ‘Scientific Revolution.’ He demonstrated that blood circulates in our body, which went against conventional wisdom-blood is created when needed and destructed after used. He collected the data of his research works and published On the Motion of the Heart and Blood in Animals(Exercitatio Anatomica de Motu Cordis et Sanguinis in Animalibus) in 1628. The South Korean version of this book is included in this paper. Harvey’s works are characterized by anatomical approach and natural philosophy. Harvey emphasized results from vivisection of a large number of animals, and he calculated the total amount of blood that is flowing through the body. Also, he tried to verify his own hypothesis by designing Ligature and Valves experiment. From these scientific approaches, Harvey is considered a founder modern medicine. Harvey, however, used another source. He was full of respect for the academic traditions of ancient Greece, especially for the philosophy of Aristotle. This is the second feature of Harvey’s works. Aristotle had regarded the idea of circulation as important, so Harvey could produce the theory of blood circulation. Also, he considered heart as the center of the body in accordance with Aristotle’s ideas. But, unlike Aristotle, Harvey valued blood, not the heart, as the origin of life. Beyond that, Harvey maintained a view that Nature did nothing in vain, meaning our bodies were made in the most economical and efficient way. This view should make Harvey to be responsive to contradiction or superfluous reiteration among theories about heart and blood. Harvey could harmonize the experimental area of anatomy and the area of natural philosophy without conflict by refusing to teleological argumentation. In spite of the influence that he got from the philosophy of Aristotle, he purposely avoided arguing about teleology or God’s plan. He believed evidence from experimentation was enough and was satisfied that he could discovery the way how body works.
