세브란스 학생 독립운동-네트워크 형성과 3･1운동의 전국적 확대를 중심으로

본 논문은 종교계의 지도자와 더불어 삼일운동에서 중심적인 역할을 담당한 학생들의 독립운동을 다루고자 한다. 그 중에서도 세브란스연합의학교 학생들이 전개한 독립운동을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 세브란스연합의학전문학교 학생들의 독립운동은 다음과 같은 특징이 있었다. 먼저 그들은 기독교라는 종교적인 공동체에 속하여 모두 YMCA의 회원이었고, 회합을 통해 끈끈한 결속력을 보였다. 이를 바탕으로 다른 전문학교 학생들과 연대를 이룰 수 있었다. 그리고 세브란스가 여러 기독교 교파의 연합으로 세워진 학교였기 때문에 한반도 전역에서 의학교육을 받고자 하는 청년들이 이 학교로 진학하였다. 따라서 그들의 출신지는 매우 다양했고, 다양한 출신지는 서울과 각 지역에서 독립운동이 일어나는 데에 큰 이점으로 작용했다. 그들은 학교 근처에 모여 살았고, 하숙집을 중심으로 독립운동의 구체적인 행보를 구상하고 의견을 나눴다. 그 곳이 바로 화천정 126번지이고, 이곳에 김문진, 배동석을 비롯한 세브란스 학생들이 이곳에 모여 살며 만세운동을 도모하였다. 이들은 만세시위의 주동자였고, 실형을 언도받았다. 또한 세브란스의전 학생들은 그들의 출신지역(고향)을 중심으로 독립선언서를 배포하여 각 지역에서 일어난 만세운동의 도화선을 마련하였다. 김병수, 배동석은 서울과 군산, 이리, 김해, 함안 등에서 순차적으로 독립운동이 일어날 수 있도록 독립선언서를 배포하고, 만세시위를 조직하는 역할을 담당하였다. 이처럼 세브란스 학생들은 그들의 교육의 거점과 출신거점을 중심으로 독립운동을 펼쳐 나아갔다. 이러한 그들의 활동은 삼일운동사에도 큰 비중을 차지하고 있다.
Abstract
This paper examines the independence movement of students, who played an important role in the March 1st Movement, along with religious leaders. In particular, I looked into the Independence Movement developed by the students of Severance Union Medical College, which had the following characteristics. First, they belonged to the religious community of Christianity, and all of them were members of the YMCA and showed solid bonds through meetings. Based on this, they were able to establish solidarity with students from other career (technical) colleges. Second, they had various backgrounds. Since Severance Union Medical College was founded as a union of several Christian denominations, young Koreans, especially young Christians, from throughout the Korean Peninsula who wanted to receive a medical education gathered at this college. Their hometowns were diverse, which served as a great advantage in the independence movement in Seoul and other regions. They lived near the school, where the Seoul station was located, and shared plans of specific steps for the independence movement, exchanging opinions at their boarding house. It was at 126 Hwacheonjeong in Seoul where Bae Dong-seok, Kim Moon-jin and other Severance students lived together and planned the independence movement of students. They were the leaders of the student independence movement who received from several months to one and a half year sentences. In addition, students of Severance Union Medical College distributed the Declaration of Independence, centering on their hometowns, and created the cause of the March 1st Movement occurring in each area. Kim Byung-soo and Bae Dong-seok are representative figures in charge of the movement. As a result, the students of Severance Union Medical College based their independence movement on their educational institutions and their hometowns. These activities were also a big part of the March 1st Movement.
