Abstract
This study examines the transformation of nursing education in Korea from 1945 through the 1950s, focusing on the intersection between U.S. aid policies and Korean nurses. In response to the lingering colonial legacy, Korean nurses sought to reform nursing education to establish their professional status after liberation. U.S. aid during and after the Korean War promoted university-level training and public health nursing to professionalize the field and improve its social standing. As a result, U.S. aid to nursing education and the efforts of the Korean nurses to advance the profession were successful in part to overcome Japanese colonial legacies. The remnants of Japanese nursing practices embedded in various aspects of Korean nursing sector were, to some extent, addressed through improvements in nursing education. However, Korean nurses’ sustained efforts to elevate their social status through improvements in nursing education ultimately exposed the structural limitations inherent in the gendered social order of Korean society.
