Abstract
This paper examines the establishment of Pyongyang Union Christian Hospital under Japanese colonial rule, focusing on the dual strategies that Korean Protestant communities employed to navigate missionary networks and colonial authorities. The hospital, a product of inter-mission collaboration, emerged as a major private medical institution amid growing competition with a government hospital administered by colonial authorities. This study first explores the consolidation of mission hospitals in the 1910s in response to the expansion of the colonial medical system, and then analyzes the increased involvement of Korean doctors and patients after 1923 through the concept of “two-way negotiation.” This concept highlights how members of the Korean Protestant network in Pyongyang became key agents in shaping the colonial medical publicness by repeatedly making pragmatic choices between colonial power and missionary forces.
