아시아재단과 1950년대 한국미술계

이 논문은 미국 스탠포드 대학의 후버 인스티튜션 아카이브(Hoover Institution Archive)에 소장되어 있는 아시아재단 관련 아카이브 자료에 대한 분석을 통해 1950년대 한국미술계에 대한 아시아재단의 후원 양상을 살펴보고 그것이 한국미술계에 끼친 영향에 대해 고찰해본 연구이다. 1950년대에 아시아재단이 한국미술계를 위해 펼친 사업을 살펴본 결과, 1950년대 한국에서 수행한 미술관련 사업을 통해 아시아 재단은 건전하고 건강한 문화 환경 조성을 통해 한국의 결속력을 강화하고 나아가 공산주의자와 차별화된 문화후원자로서의 재단의 위상을 확립하려는 의도를 갖고 있었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 그러나 후버 인스티튜션 아카이브의 자료는 다른 기관, 예컨대 록펠러 아카이브 센터의 그것과 달리 그렇게 체계적으로 정리, 보존되어 있지 않은 것으로 보인다. 더구나 60년대 자료는 50년대와 달리 아직 공개되지 않은 자료가 많은 것으로 추정된다. 아시아재단의 60년대 사업이 어떠한 양상을 보여주었는지에 대해서는 후속 연구를 기대한다.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the Asia Foundation’s cultural projects in Korea during the 1950s and their impact on the Korean art community. The Asia Foundation thought that its cultural programs in Korea should be given every encouragement to help hold the Korean people together and build up freedom of expression as another aspect of defense against Communist assult. It thus tried to support the Korean art community through progams such as providing artists with art supplies, furnishing the National Museum of Korea and artists’ group with financial assistance for slide lecture projects, sponsoring travel abroad for outstanding artists, and so on. These programs would eventually help to retain the Asia Foudation's reputation in Korea as a “cultural organization” and give concrete evidence of American cultural awareness.
