Abstract

The paper analyzes the implicit poetic meaning and musical coherence in Robert Schumann’s Romanzen und Balladen II (Op. 49) to consider it as a song cycle. While the three songs in the piece are not related to each other from a poetic point of view, the double self (Doppelgänger) appears with a sense of self-criticism that ironically reflects on the contradictions. Musically, the double self is portrayed by keys related by parsimonious voice leading and symmetry by the tritone in the three songs. In addition, La Marseillaise, quoted as a melody symbolizing self-criticism in the work, can be viewed as an important tool for interpreting it as a song cycle. The cadence of each song is also another musical expression of the double self; in particular, the cadence of the final song leads to a cycle to the first, playing a decisive role in positioning Op. 49 as a song cycle.
