본고는 권미원이 『장소 특정적 미술』에서 제시한 ‘장소해제’가 구체적 장소 지정을 회피함으로써, 자신이 추구한 차별화된 장소의 건설을 오히려 지연시키고 방해하는 결과를 낳을 수 있는 모순을 지적한다. 『장소 특정적 미술』의 저술 목적이 차별화된 장소의 건설에 있음을 밝히고자 지리학의 ‘장소상실’과 ‘또 한 장소’의 연관성을 분석한다. 다음으로 권미원이 정리한 장소 특정적 미술의 계보를 따라 장소가 공동체로 대체하는 과정을 고찰함으로써 그가 어떻게 공동체의 불가능성과 장소해제라는 결론에 이르렀는지를 살펴보고 그 추상성을 비판한다. 결론적으로 차별화된 장소를 실현하기 위해서는 장소 특정적 미술이 구체적인 장소를 토대로 이루어져야 함을 주장한다.
Abstract
This essay points out the paradox of “unsiting” in Miwon Kwon’s theorization of the site-specificity in her book One Place after Another: Site-Specific Art and Locational Identity. I argue that Kwon’s “unsiting” possibly delays and hinders the construction of differential places by avoiding the reservation of actual places. I analyze the relationship between the geographical “placelessness” and “another place” to account that the purpose of Kwon’s book is in the creation of the differential places. I examine the process of replacing “places” with “communities” along the line of Kwon’s genealogy of the site-specific art to describe how Kwon reached the impossibility of community, eventually claiming the abstract idea of unsitting. I emphasize the importance of the site-specific art based on actual places for the realization of the differential places.
