미디어 퍼포먼스는 아름다운 대상을 재현하는 것을 거부하고 기존의 규칙과 편견에 충격을 가하며 테크놀로지를 기반으로 한 다양한 실험을 통해 새로운 표현 방식을 찾는다. 이러한 아방가르드적 속성은 리얼리즘적 사고에 익숙한 현대인들로 하여금 한 눈에 대상을 파악하고 그를 통해 즐거운 감정을 느끼는 것에 실패하게 한다. 이러한 몰이해의 상태는 즉각적인 쾌가 아닌 불쾌를 유발하는데, 이는 반성적 사유를 기반으로 한 정신능력의 강화 또는 새로운 규칙의 발견을 통해서 벗어날 수 있는 것이며 이는 더욱 강력한 쾌인 환희의 감정을 불러일으킨다. 본 연구는 테크놀로지를 활용한 실험을 기반으로 기존의 공연 예술의 규칙과 관습을 파괴하고 새로운 표현방식을 탐구하는 미디어 퍼포먼스의 아방가르드적 속성에 주목하며 그것을 통한 관객의 미적 체험을 숭고로써 설명하는데 그목적이 있다. 특히 포스트모던 사회를 배경으로 독자적인 숭고론을 개진한 리오타르의 숭고에 집중, 미디어 퍼포먼스가 자본주의의 총체적 담론에 의해 비인간으로 전락한 현대인들의 사고에 균열을 내며 그를 통해 그들을 비인간으로부터 해방시킬 수 있는 예술로써 수행함을 제안한다.
Abstract
Media performance rejects the reproduction of beautiful objects, impacts existing rules and prejudices, and finds new ways of expression through various technology based experiments. This avant-garde attribute means that modern people, used to realism, are unable to comprehend and enjoy objects at a quick glance. This state of misunderstanding induces discomfort rather than immediate pleasure, which can be escaped through reinforcing intellectual activities based on reflective thinking or the discovery of new rules, which in turn raises the emotions of more powerful pleasurable delights. This study focuses on the avant-garde nature of media performance and explains the aesthetic experience of the audience through it as sublime. Focusing especially on Lyotard’s theory of the sublime, who developed his own theory of the sublime in the background of postmodern society, I suggest that the media performance is carried out as an art that can liberate people who became inhuman through the total discourse of capitalism.
