이 논문은 인터랙티브 다큐멘터리의 구성요소를 밝히고, 그 의미작용에 관해 짚어내는 것을 목표로 한다. 이를 위해 21세기 뉴미디어와 의미화 과정에 대한 총체적 해석을 제시하는 볼터(Jay David Bolter)와 그루신(Richard Grusin) 및 마노비치(Lev Manovich)의 이론을 참고로 하여 인터랙티브 다큐멘터리에 적용한다. 이것은 뉴미디어 시대 다큐멘터리의 위치와 더불어 앞으로 나아가야 할 방향을 진단하는데 도움이 되고자 함이다. 인터랙티브 다큐멘터리는 현재 트랜스미디어 콘텐츠로서 세계적 주목을 받고 있다. 그리고 지금까지의 평가는 두 가지로 나뉘는 양상을 보인다. 하나는, 디지털 테크놀로지의 발전 가능성을 통해 인터랙티브 다큐멘터리를 전통적인 다큐멘터리의 대안으로 보는 긍정적 입장이다. 다른 하나는, 인터랙티브 다큐멘터리가 다큐멘터리의 범주에 포함되는지 의문을 제기하는 부정적 입장이다. 하지만 이 논문은 기술결정론을 경계하면서도 이러한 이분법적 논의에서 벗어나 인터랙티브 다큐멘터리를 구성하는 요소들과 더불어 각각의 의미를 짚어본다. 먼저, 인터랙티브 다큐멘터리의 제작 및 연구 현황을 살펴보고, 인터랙티브 다큐멘터리의 구성요소를 큰 틀에서 세 가지로 나눈다. 첫째, 인터랙티브 다큐멘터리의 ‘리얼리티’와 ‘재매개의 이중 논리’, 둘째, 인터랙티브 다큐멘터리의 인터랙티비티로서 ‘선택’과 ‘신체적 행위’, 셋째, 인터랙티브 다큐멘터리의 인터랙티브 서사를 구성하는 요소로서 데이터베이스, 인터넷, 사용자, 인터페이스이다. 이 논문은 이러한 인터랙티브 다큐멘터리의 구성요소를 바탕으로 각각이 함축하는 의미를 밝힌다.
Abstract
This paper aims to clarify the elements of the interactive documentary and analyse its meanings. To do this, the theories of Jay David Bolter & Richard Grusin and Lev Manovich, presenting a comprehensive interpretation of the 21st century new media and its signification, are applied to the interactive documentary. This process to examine will help to diagnose the current position of the documentary as well as the direction to go forward in the new media age. The interactive documentary is now receiving worldwide attention as a trans-media content, its view divided into two simple aspects: one is a positive position as an alternative to the traditional documentary, which praises the infinite possibilities of digital technology. The other is a negative stance that questions whether the interactive documentary is not included in the category of documentary. However, this paper attempts to deviate from dichotomous discussion by examining the political, social, and cultural meanings of the interactive documentary as cautious with technical determinism. This paper is divided into three parts as follows in order to identify the elements and meanings of the interactive documentary: first, ‘choice’ and ‘physical action’ as the interactivity, second, reality of the interactive documentary and the double logic of remediation, third, database, internet, user, and interface as the elements of the interactive narrative.
