Abstract
Since objects only make sense as objects of human consciousness, film objects have always been used to symbolize sets, narrative reproducibility, and abstract concepts. Objects are considered as secondary among many elements of fiction films, so there are not many directors who think about their artistic form. However, some directors, such as Lubitch and Hitchcock, have broadened this horizon by expressing interest in the theatrical mise-en-scene, which expresses the psychology of the characters and the philosophical versatility of the object. Especially in Bresson’s L’Argent, the object, independent from the narrative discourse, focuses on their materiality of the object itself, not as an object of consciousness. Bresson’s objects are very similar to the materiality of Dutch paintings because they are non-narrative, there are trace of human activity and perception of its presence. Nevertheless, it’s not only in the similarity between Bresson’s object and Dutch paintings that there are a cinematic value. It is also an experiment to the extent that a fiction film, not an experimental film, can visualize the materiality of an object, in the context of modern art no longer reproducing absolute ideas or visualizing abstract concepts and emphasizing the physical properties of objects.
