한국영화의 비/인간 표상 연구: 동물 변이와 동물 호명 영화를 중심으로

이 논문의 일차적 목적은 한국영화에 등장했던 동물-인간의 표상에 대한 탐구이다. 민주화 이전의 시기(1960년대∼1980년대)에 집중적으로 제작된 동물 변이와 동물 호명 영화들이 구체적인 대상이 된다. 인간과 동물의 경계를 넘나드는 비/인간 표상의 작동원리와 그것의 배후에 놓인 시대적 정서를 파악하고자 한다. 이러한 작업은 강압시대의 대중 감정을 추적하는 일이자, 억압적 사회에 대응하는 영화의 미묘한 자리를 가늠할 계기가 될 것이다. 이 글에서 문제화한 것은 동물-인간의 젠더이다. 동물화된 인물이 주로 여성이고, 정권의 통제가 심할수록 그들이 취한 동물적 속성이 강화되고 있다는 점, 반면 남성은 대개 무기력한 모습으로 등장한다는 점에 주목한다. 동물-여성의 공격성은 공과 사의 영역에서 자행되는 악행을 멈추게 하는 힘이다. 그리고 비록 죽음으로 마감되긴 하지만, 동물-여성의 맹목적 헌신은 남성의 무능을 치유케 할 마지막 남은 가능성이다. 여기에서 새삼 확인되는 것은 남성의 의존성이자, 그러한 의존성이 드러나는 것에 대한 남성의 불안이다. 여성을 공격적인 동물로 만든 배후에 놓여 있는 것은, 공적인 분노로 표출되지 못한 남성의 울분이다. 국가의 이상에 부응하지도 그에 맞서지도 못한 남성의 무력함이 여성들을 뱀, 고양이, 여우, 벌레, 곤충으로 만들었다는 것이다. 남성 헤게모니의 지층에 눌려 있는 여성 고유의 정동을 빌어 표출된 남성의 불안, 그것이 여성을 혐오동물로 만든 핵심적 힘이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to explore animal-human representations in Korean films. Films that dealt with animal transformation and animal metaphoric human, which were produced intensively during the pre-democracy period (1960s-1980s), are specific objects. It seeks to grasp the working principle of non-human representations that cross human and animal boundaries and the periodic emotion behind it. This work will not only track the public emotions of the coercive era, but will also provide an opportunity to measure the subtle position of the cinema in response to the oppressive society. The main focus of this article is gender of animal-human. It is worth noting that the animalized characters are mainly female, and the stronger the regime’s control, the stronger the animal attributes they take, whereas males usually appear as helpless. Animal-female aggression is the power to deal with the evils committed in the public or private sphere. And even though it ended in death, blind devotion of animal-female is the last remaining possibility to cure male incompetence. What becomes clearer here is male dependence and male anxiety about the manifestation of such dependence. What lies behind making women into aggressive animals is a man’s pent-up anger(‘鬱憤 ulbun’) that has not been expressed in public anger. Men’s helplessness, unable to live up to the state’s ideals and fight against it, eventually turned women into snakes, cats, foxes, worms, and insects. The anxiety of men expressed through the intrinsic affect of a woman pressed by the strata of the male hegemony, that is the core force that made the women disgusting animals.
