Abstract

This thesis proposes a new genre term ‘digital minimal music’ to describe a certain form of music currently emerging in digital culture. As a genre of electronic music, digital minimal music is a novel style of minimalist music that originated from the digital culture of the late 1990s. The most distinctive feature of digital minimal music is its extremely minimalized musical appearance. It can be composed of pure sine waves with no timbre data, miniscule segments of sounds shorter than one seconds, or the noises of ‘ti-tic’ sounds that fill the long duration of a musical piece as sparsely as possible. It often uses some persisting sounds but with the minimum perceivable volume so that recognizing the change in sounds over time is difficult. It also uses ‘repetition as failure’ without signalling any intention from the composer.
